| On close scrutiny of the traditional
leather puppets one finds the design and detailing truly fascinating.
Strong black outline is a predominant feature. The head is mostly
drawn in profile. Elaborate ornamentation along with selective colours
(red, black, green, occasional blue and yellow of the leather) and
carefully punched out holes are all cleverly selected to create the
desired visual impact. These are study sketches. I also studied the
stylization of the Chitrakathi paintings of Maharashtra, as they are
very similar to the designs on the Karnataka leather puppets. |
